Executive Assistant
Gilbane Building Company
“I demonstrate my commitment to value every voice in the workplace by allowing all voices to be heard when it comes to their concerns, questions, and suggestions with safety. After all, one great idea or inquiry can create a whole string of great ideas, which is proven each and every day on our job sites! Make sure that everyone who is comfortable shares their personal stories, questions and suggestions so that it can create an environment where everyone wants to make sure they and their teams go home safely to their families each and every day!“
Randall Grzenia
Ironworker
BMWC Constructors, Inc.
“As a former on site foreman and current member of a crew, I felt that giving everyone within the crew the opportunity to express all safety concerns was a great tool of communication. Whether the person is a 20 year journeyman or a 1st year apprentice, including everyone in daily safety talks and asking for their input on what can I do to help them make the job easier, safer and more efficient, created a great culture and sense of a team. Communication is the key to helping the day to day tasks run as smooth as possible. “
Paul Nino
Senior Superintendent
Mortenson
“It's one thing to lead a project, stand in front at every meeting, and lead stretch and bend every morning. Knowing everyone by name and making it a commitment to say hi to everyone and spark a conversation with as many people as possible in a day, brings a whole different culture to a project. I want the people that work alongside me to truly believe and trust that I am a partner, a teammate, and a person they can feel comfortable with to bring up any issues or challenges. Once trust is established people feel more comfortable about being heard. When things are brought up or discussed, follow up is so important to maintain trust. Sharing issues or concerns throughout the ranks and not just in Forman meetings is critical in demonstrating my commitment to everyone's voice. “
Shavell Walker
Laborer
Alberici Constructors
“I am respectful and listen to everyone. I make sure as a woman I am also heard. I don’t back down. I let others know when something isn’t right. I expect them to let me know when something isn’t right. We as a whole group have to work together to make this a safe place to work. Being seen and heard is something I strive for daily. As I notice everyone around me. I make sure I know my surroundings and let others know when I enter theirs. I clean all paths to make sure they are clear all paths for every other job description on this site so they don’t trip over, get caught in or hit with debris. Put up red tape and am committed to making sure everyone makes it home that night, not just myself. “
Hailee Swanson
Field Engineer
Hensel Phelps
“When walking around the jobsite, I perform safety walks that allow for all trade partners to voice their concerns as well as the positives in Hensel Phelps safety culture. This is important because trade partners can see that not only is their voice being heard, but they are creating real change around our jobsite. My goal around the jobsite is to ensure that everyone makes it home to their families. The best way to ensure this happens is by hearing from the trade partners and acknowledging their needs and concerns. “
Octavian Olson
General Foreman
Granite Construction
“Involving all personnel that will be part of an installation allows each and every person to speak up about what their own personal take on safety and what processes make them feel safe. Over the years my crews have come up with great suggestions and or additions to the processes brought up in our JHA’s. Allowing individuals to express their point of view instead of the way “It’s always been done” has had a positive impact on the way we do work and will continue going forward. It’s been said a lot but, my crews buy into and live by “There are no stupid questions” only those that are not expressed and asked. “
Nicholas Seldomridge
Substation Superintendent
Blattner Company
“With so many new faces on the job, I’m personally responsible with making sure everyone feels comfortable with our safety standards. A lot of crew members have little to zero construction experience. It is imperative everyone feels comfortable to speak. We know they have questions. We know they’re unsure about a lot of things. My goal is to talk with my crew (any crew) and let them know there is no stupid questions. I want stupid questions. I want silly questions. I want them asking questions about Blattner. Our tools. Our safety culture. I give them my work and personal number and insist they call me if they feel uncomfortable. Or they question a task. “
Ashleigh Mathis
Electrical work- E3
Eldeco Inc.
“My commitment to valuing every voice is demonstrated by using my voice. I am safety conscious & bring it to my coworkers’ attention if & when they are doing a task in an unsafe manner or if I’m put in a position that threatens my safety. I speak up & if I’m not heard, I speak again. I’ve been taught that safety begins with me, so I use my voice now. “
alexander mclean

Terracon Consultants, Inc
“ I listen attentively to all feedback, suggestions, and concerns from my colleagues, ensuring that every voice is heard and respected. I also am continuously trying educate myself on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, seeking out opportunities for growth and learning to better support my colleagues and promote a culture of belonging.“
Véronique Bergeron
Civil coordinator
Kiewit
“I think valuing every voice starts with knowing your collegues on a more personal basis. It helps building trust between all of us, which leads to more open discussions and more engagement from everyone. Also, when a trustful environement is acquired, it's easier to value everyone's opinion.“

"I am a woman in the construction industry so knowing that my voice is heard and valued is very important to me. I am also someone who has less experience than a lot of my coworkers and knowing that they have my back and are willing to teach me means that I can do things the right way and the safe way. I value the voices of my team to lead, instruct, and improve so that I can do the same for them."

"I demonstrate my commitment to valuing every voice in the workplace by treating every employee equal no matter what colored hat we wear, or what position we hold, listening to team members ideas, thoughts, and safety concerns, regardless where they fit in on our team. I am also committed to safety because I was once an occupational health nurse that took care of EE that got injured. I went back to school and got my Occupational Health & Safety bachelors degree because I wanted to be the person on a job site that made it safe enough that we did not need an occupational health nurse to take care of injuries. I do believe in every single employee returning home better than what they came in to. what I mean by that is they are better than what they came in knowing that they’re gonna have money at the end of the week. I make a commitment to safety for my family for my employees and for my company."

"Every one of us brings a unique perspective to our work environment, even if it’s a “bad” look, they’re all learning opportunities for us to see what works, what works really well, and what doesn’t work, which is just as valuable. I feel very fortunate that I work around people that I can speak openly with, and conversations are considered constructive and helpful, rather than mocking or dismissive. Being able to speak up about something without fear of ridicule, consequences, or seeming naive makes me feel that I’m in a safe zone where I can learn and grow, and know that I can ask questions if necessary. I haven’t seen this demonstrated consistently in other companies I’ve worked for , so I know that speaking up sets the example for new hires, so they know they should do the same. "

"As a field engineer I get to learn a great lot from both our craft and safety professionals. In the field it is imperative to value our craft input and I actively engage with them to see where their safety concerns are and prioritize their voices in our decision-making process when planning how to utilize our site with my superintendent and other Field Engineers. I also do my best to foster an environment where every individual feels comfortable speaking up so that even the quietest among our team have the opportunity to create a positive impact on our jobsite. As I believe communication is key to success and an important virtue not only in the work place, but in our daily lives, I like to be someone who is approachable and understanding. Therefore, I listen to be heard. And I value every choice to give value to my own choices. "

"Acknowledging everyone, including their actions and opinions, helps to build a safer job site. When a new person comes to the job and they are unsure if where they parked is ok, they should feel welcomed and be able to ask if they parked in a safe spot. Or if someone new comes to the job and they don't know how to do something, they will ask if they are not concerned about being made fun of, or be ridiculed for not knowing the answer. It builds trust. People are less likely to make assumptions that could get them hurt, if they know they are welcomed and valued. "

"I strongly believe in valuing every voice in the workplace. I will demonstrate this by actively listening to everyone's input during meetings and team discussions, and by encouraging diverse perspectives. To ensure inclusivity, I will encourage all team members, especially those who may be quieter or from underrepresented groups, to share their ideas. I will acknowledge and build on these ideas in collaborative efforts. Furthermore, I will advocate for colleagues whose points might be overlooked or marginalized and continue to learn about diversity and inclusion to solidify my commitment. By fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued, I can contribute to a culture of respect and inclusivity in the workplace. "

"The culture of the construction industry has ebbed and flowed over many decades, evolving into what we know as our present-day workforce – but how many of us truly understand the deeply rooted stigmas of our industry and their contemporary impact on today’s workforce? Although our industry continues to evolve, it’s no secret that, both traditionally and historically, construction has been primarily a male dominated field. Regardless of our own opinions on diversity, one fact remains – a major percentage of our industry is male. We also know as humans, we are all faced with countless stereotypes and stigmas, based on race, gender, social status, etc. – While these stigmas and stereotypes may not be accurate to everyone, it would be negligent to leave them out of consideration when addressing total worker health and safety. My personal commitment to safety is based on understanding these stigmas, and goes beyond physicality alone, to encompass the overall well-being of each individual worker. For me, this starts with establishing a culture of care, creating a space that is comfortable for everyone to express themselves – it is equally important to me that an individual feels the same level of comfortability in reporting a physical hazard as they would an invisible hazard. Over years of observing worker interactions, I’ve recognized a pattern among male workers that begs our consideration. While we cannot say that all reactions will always be the same, repeated patterns among any group is worth analyzing. The most prominent stereotypical pattern among male workers I have interacted with, is the negative stigma of mental health. More specifically, the construction industry has one of the highest national rates of suicide. For every 100,000 workers, 53 will die by suicide. This staggering statistic is four times greater than the national average and five times greater than that of all other construction fatalities combined. While these statistics are measured industry-wide, it is important to take into take into consideration again, our workforce majority and how these stigmas contribute to our statistics. Suicide and oppressed mental health has become an epidemic within our own community. As my personal commitment to safety, I’ve challenged myself to proactively identify these obstacles by providing a comprehensive safety program that puts equal emphasis on each aspect of complete worker safety. Although these stigmas may be where we originated, it is not where we are going. It is my belief that, if we remain united and work together to break down the walls of stigma built by the generations before us, we can positively influence the industry we call ours, and pave the way for our future industry leaders. "As a new employee to Granite, I have come to realize that there is much to learn and consider in the workplace in the field and administratively. This gives me the opportunity to listen intently and learn from those who have built up their tenured positions, be it 1 month or 25 years. Giving my team members a chance to speak without interrupting their thought processes gives those individuals the opportunity to teach in a way that is "unfiltered", giving their thoughts a processed meaning that has much more intent and value. In hearing what much of the team has to offer and the advice and direction already given, I see that there is much to take away from team members that share their thoughts; what it takes is a moment to listen and absorb what they have to say. The culture that I have witnessed thus far has opened my eyes to what other companies are missing; the opportunity for newcomers to speak up, ask questions that in turn opens up time to witness, listen and learn from everyone on the team. "One way I am committed to valuing every voice in the workplace is by implementing an ongoing anonymous feedback program where employees can safely express their thoughts and concerns without fear of retaliation. Additionally, organizing regular active listening sessions where members of different teams have the opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives is a positive point. To create an inclusive environment, creating affinity groups to provide a safe space for employees to share their unique experiences and contributions is a great way to reinforce trust between workers. Transparency in decision-making and fair recognition of all contributors will further strengthen our culture of valuing every voice in the workplace. As an Intern at Fluor Chile, I am grateful for these activities and the Human Resources team where I feel confident and have shown me that I can express myself and raise my voice without problem."
