"You have to be open-minded. And the last question when you asked for peoples opinion, you have to be open to what others have to say no matter how big or small their idea is. And it’s even more true when we hire a new guy and he comes to our crew. They have a fresh perspective on things that we see every day, they may see something from an outsider perspective and that idea or opinion, even though they may not have years of experience in the field, may just be the exact solution or the best safety practice to put forth. Not just listening but also acting on every voice, sharing ideas and concerns of ALL others with project teams and safety coordinators on a weekly basis is essential to project success and to the safety of all those present each and every day. Is there anything we can improve on to make the task safer? Most times there is very positive feed back that dictates how we preform the same if not similar task in the future. After our morning meeting we preform a jsa for our first task of the day. I ask for input and suggestions as I put try to ensure the Salt Lake City Office is free of debri, garbage, stocked with safety items, PPE, clean paths of mobility, and ease and access to office items needed. A consolidation of boxes and storage clearly marked so the need to lift and rummage through the contents and risk dropping the box or tweaking backs is reduced. "Demonstrating a commitment to valuing every voice in the workplace involves creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where all employees feel heard, respected, and empowered to share their thoughts and ideas. Here are some ways to demonstrate this commitment: 1. Active listening: Give your full attention to employees when they speak, and show that you value their input. 2. Open communication channels: Encourage open and honest communication throughout the organization. 3. Diverse and inclusive culture: Foster a culture that celebrates diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. 4. Employee feedback and surveys: Regularly seek feedback and act on employee suggestions to show that their voices are heard. 5. Inclusive decision-making: Involve employees from various departments and levels in decision-making processes. 6. Employee recognition and empowerment: Recognize and reward employees' contributions and empower them to take ownership of their work. 7. Training and development: Provide training on inclusive leadership, unconscious bias, and effective communication. 8. Anonymous feedback options: Offer anonymous feedback channels for employees who may not feel comfortable sharing their thoughts openly. 9. Regular town hall meetings: Hold regular town hall meetings where employees can ask questions and share their thoughts. 10. Leadership accessibility: Encourage leaders to be approachable and accessible to all employees. By implementing these strategies, you can create a workplace culture that truly values every voice and promotes a sense of belonging and engagement among all employees."

"I take the time to schedule a pre task call with all project stakeholders and listen to any concerns they may have with any of the tasks we will be performing. It is especially important to listen to less experienced staff and make sure they understand the taslks they will be completing so they go home safe at the end of the day."

It's not only a great motivator, but also a way to create a workplace where everyone feels important and heard. By regularly acknowledging your team's hard work, you're not only boosting morale, but also setting the stage for a company culture that puts a premium on every individual's contribution. This culture of recognition helps to create a sense of unity and belonging, leading to improved teamwork and productivity. So, don't forget to give praise often and let your employees know how much their efforts mean in building a positive and inclusive work environment."

"Our safety lady is very important to our group she takes care of 4 projects she genuinely shows she cares about every single worker out here. She talks to all of us and never talks down to no one even when she’s investigating and incident. She goes out of her way to always make sure we go home safe. "

"We use the ONE Voice Commitee which allows' craft Team members to discuss their concerns with safety and site management. I use the information gathered at these bi-weekly meetings to improve my own communication skills while reaching out to and coaching the Team members in the field performing the work. When I can approach a crew with solutions, rather than just showing them they aren't in compliance, it increases trust between craft and safety. Arriving with a solution to a problem that has been discussed within the team and maybe even pushed up the chain shows workers that they are being heard and their suggestions are even considered. Showing our TM's that their voice matters is my way of proving value of their opinions."

When we see high-performing teams, most of the time there is a strong sense of inclusivity and every team member is willing to speak up to work collaboratively towards a solution. "When you express your opinion with your voice and let it be heard by others, it will be more respected and more apt to be taken seriously and remembered by others if it is expressed with an enthusiastic attitude and a confident opinion of the topic you are discussing. That is why you should never be afraid of vocalizing your opinion whether it is big or small or right or wrong, but you should always do it in a professional and well manner way as to not offend or discriminate against anyone that we are talking with. We as employees of a large company need to conduct ourselves with pride and professionalism when discussing what we feel is important to us. "

As a new employee with 3 months experience, my safety is important to me and the guys I work with. Not seeing this type of work before , it is hard to find out the right or wrong way of doing things. The person hurt is obviously one but their family and co-workers are also affected. In the case of a bad injury the first responders lives and the medical staff are affected. Don't be a ripple for the bad, stay safe and keep the safety waters calm. "

"I've been in the field and just moved into the office on my current project. When I was with a crew I listened and paid attention to changes in people which helped with knowing the metal and physical changes to each crew member which helped make decisions to speak up easier by building trust amongst a crew. When I worked the last project in the connex, I kept a fully stocked fridge and snacks in case my teams forgot lunch, needed something to boost blood sugar, or just to cool down. I treated my team members as if they were my own family they could come and vent and know it would go nowhere unless I could do something to help their situation. Now that I am in an office position I still jump in and go out to the field to help my crews if they need me, they all know, I have an open-door policy anytime for anything, and I have crew sponsorship which I think is great it helps me connect with the crews on a whole different level being involved in their SWI and day to day activities even though I'm not in the field every day. For the woman I try to bring together the gap between field and office to create a stronger more heard community. The craft teams should never feel like they are getting slighted compared to the office people in my eyes we are all equal focusing on the same goal to work safely, to care for one another because we are like family, and to make sure everyone goes home to their families mentally and physically safe. Because this job can be both mentally and physically exhausting. "

"Every morning at stretch and bend, each member of the team is asked if they have any feedback for the safety of the site. They are also encouraged to ask questions if they have any prior to the days tasks starting. Throughout the day, as questions arise, all members involved with the task in question are asked for their feedback and opinions prior to moving forward with a resolution to ensure all perspectives are taken into account. "Demonstrating my commitment to valuing every voice in the workplace starts with having an inclusive culture where everyone feels heard and respected. Since my time at Mortenson, I have encouraged any and all feedback, which in return gives others the confidence to voice their opinions and concerns. Also, being involved in things such as LIT as well as attending the DEI Lunch and Learns gets myself more involved into Mortenson's Culture, where we are meeting withs others outside of teams we meet on a Day-to-Day basis. These are great opportunities to hear even more perspectives and ideas from many different people all around the company, where I can learn new ideas and practices that I can bring back to my workplace. Mortenson also provides me and its employees with some great leadership commitments, we can demonstrate our dedication to creating a workplace where every voice is valued and respected. "

"“If you see something, say something“ this would mean nothing on the job site if you don’t value each and every voice involved. Extremely important to include all when considering the strength of safety on site and your safety culture. You can only build an excellent safety culture with every voice involved. From upper management to workers in the field. It is a constant team effort to keep everyone safe."

"As a Project Manager with Mortenson building largescale windfarms, we have small armies of craft workforces on our project sites. We self-perform the large majority of the work. For me it's important to take the time to get to know our team members on a personal level - where they're from, if they have children, or if their spouse travels with them. I think that as a team, when we all feel more connected with one another, it becomes even more of an obligation to make smart, safe decisions for one another. We owe it to one another because we've transformed from being more than just coworkers, but to having a friendship, and even a familial bond. "

"In an evolving world where mental health and well-being is being explored and discussed on an individual level, it's simply not enough to make sweeping declarations and expect trust and buy-in. It takes conversation and listening to understand those around you. I'm committing to listening to each voice and practicing empathy as tools to help create a healthy community within my workplace where safety thrives."

"Every day that you are fortunate enough to wake up, you are faced with choices. Humans are by nature selfish creatures, thus it's only natural to seek out the things that benefit us individually. It is a conscious choice to wake up and be proactive in making a difference in the lives of others. An outsider looking in my house of glass would see what most would consider an extremely lucky individual. While there have been a few occasions in my life that I would say yes, this was made possible by sheer luck, most have been achieved through constant battles and character defining moments. I don't look back on my childhood with fond memories. I did not feel good enough when my innocence was taken from me at 3 years old by a neighbor's grandson. I did not feel good enough the first time that I realized I was heavy, and I did not feel good enough as a 9 year old in Weight Watchers, surrounded by my friends' mothers and grandmothers. I did not feel good enough as a child of step-parent adoption, because I wasn't part of their "real" family. I did not feel good enough as a teen mom, a disappointment to my family and teachers who thought that I was better than that. I wanted to feel like I was enough. I was lonely. I longed for approval, for acceptance, for someone to notice me and say "I'm glad you're here." I did not feel good enough and I do not feel good enough. Every day I wake up and make a choice to be the best version of myself. I put makeup on to cover the invisible scars that cover my body, thick ropes of angry red tissue, tucked away for only me to see. I look for things within myself that make me feel like I'm enough. I show gratitude to the weathered hands that have decorated hundreds of birthday cakes, comforted feverish foreheads, and held the hands of the dying. I am grateful for the broad shoulders that have been a landing pad for tears and strong arms that have rocked countless babies, lips that have kissed a thousand booboos and told many jokes and spoken soft words of encouragement. I am thankful for ears that hear the silent calls for help from people in need. Most of all, I am thankful for the beating heart that is brave, that always has room for just one more person inside. I know firsthand what it's like to put on a mask and present yourself to the world. These are the people that I seek out, people that are like me, people that just want to be seen and heard, REALLY seen, not just in passing. Too often we look without seeing. It is my personal mission to see, just as I want to be seen. Each day at Mortenson presents me with an opportunity to help someone, and I grasp onto it with both hands. I see their silent struggles, I see past the mask, the rough exterior. I am the person that I needed years ago to constantly encourage me, to tell me that I AM good enough, that I was good enough all along. I choose to be the voice of those that cannot speak for themselves, and the voice whispering "I'm glad you're here." "

"I believe in the value of communication. Not only is it important to discuss safety in the workplace, equally important is to engage others whenever possible, in discussions about their daily life. This promotes a feeling of shared experiences that ultimately will foster a sense of belonging in the culture and a shared sense of responsibility to the team as a whole. The more comfortable craft, even non craft feel about opening up on a personal level, the more likely they will open up when it comes to expressing and sharing concerns, they may have with the safety of their surroundings."

"Part of the challenge is to ensure all team members regardless of title feel empowered to vocalize their thoughts, ideas and concerns. The other part is ensuring there is a platform for those thoughts, ideas, and concerns to be received by the right audience. I believe all of our team members can demonstrate their commitment by ensuring they are listening first and being courageous in their feedback. "
